On a Sunday, only a few of us gathered to take a monthly wine class at Maxwell DC. Normally this place is packed. I am anxious but excited. There will be multiple bottles placed on the bar in front of us.

Bright tropical fruit. Sweet. Dry, mineral, salty. Aromas of petrol. Sometimes sparkling. This wine goes really well with spicy foods (think Indian dishes) and soft cheeses. What is it?!

Did you guess Riesling? Yay you! Riesling is a real thing and I learned I like it. Ok, but not sweet Riesling. I still can’t get into sweet wine but I’m trying!

There is a misconception that all Rieslings are sweet. They are not! However, if you are a fan of sweet wine – look for a German wine label that has Spatlese or Kabinett. Some Riesling will also help you out and simply say “sweet.” Or if you are a fan of dry wine – look for Trocken (German) or the word “dry.”

Still unsure, ask someone in your friendly neighborhood wine shop or a Sommelier at a restaurant. They’ll point you in the right direction.

However, my favorite option is to keep tasting and try different things. Practice makes perfect and you’ll learn what you like!

Cheers!!
